(NEXSTAR) – Take a guess: Where's the most expensive place in the U.S. to give birth? If you're thinking of California or New York, you're wrong, according to a new analysis of health care cost data. The most expensive place to give birth is actually Nebraska, according to the study. In fact, the 10 most expensive states to give birth are all places typically associated with a lower cost of living. (Granted, this analysis doesn't actually take into account the cost of raising a child. That's another matter entirely.) In states like Nebraska, Oklahoma and South Dakota, giving birth costs families more than $2,500 out of pocket on average, MoneyGeek found. And that's after insurance foots a large part of the bill. The analysis, which pulls data from Health Care Cost Institute research, only includes people with employer-sponsored insurance. Meanwhile, in Michigan, giving birth costs $974. Washington, D.C., Maryland, Pennsylvania and Delaware also had much lower costs – around $1,000 and $1,200. If it's not a difference in insurance coverage, what's driving up the price of giving birth in certain states? Rural states have less competitive hospital markets, MoneyGeek said. Competition between lots of hospital options can drive prices down, but that's not happening in more rural states. Hospitals in places like Nebraska have more leverage to negotiate higher prices with insurers. Another thing that could drive up the cost of giving birth in a state or at a hospital is how commonly they perform C-sections. The surgery is done in about one-third of births nationwide, but that varies dramatically from place to place. Some hospitals perform C-sections in only 2% of low-risk births while others do it 39% of the time, a 2015 study found. Since a C-section is a more expensive procedure than a vaginal delivery, places that perform more C-sections would naturally have a higher cost of giving birth on average.
