(NEXSTAR) – Verizon users around the country reported major issues with service on Wednesday, complaining their devices were stuck on "SOS" mode. When a phone can't connect to the network, it may show "SOS" or "Emergency SOS" instead of any bars of signal. If your phone is in "SOS" mode, you won't be able to make normal calls, but you should still be able to dial 911. The call will be connected through another network or a satellite provider. To get your phone back online you have another option: connect to Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi calling is a built-in feature on most Android devices and iPhones and can be turned on under the phone’s settings. During a widespread 2024 outage, AT&T encouraged its users to connect to Wi-Fi and enable Wi-Fi calling to stay connected as issues persisted. If you're not able to connect to Wi-Fi, some apps, including Google Maps, have limited service offline. Payment apps also do not use a phone’s cell service to work and should also be functional even in "SOS" mode. You may also want to try reconnecting to the network to see if issues have resolved. Apple advises turning on Airplane Mode for at least 15 seconds, then turning it off, to see if your device will reconnect. The Associated Press contributed to this report.
