(NEXSTAR) – Several theme parks operated by Six Flags have updated their chaperone requirements amid “increasing incidents of unruly or inappropriate behavior” across the amusements industry, a representative for Six Flags said. “Safety is a top priority and we have zero tolerance for any type of disruptive behavior,” the spokesperson told Nexstar. The updated requirements, which have been adopted at three parks — Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington; Six Flags Over Georgia in Austell; and Kings Dominion in Doswell, Virginia — mandate that all guests 17 and younger be accompanied by a chaperone over the age of 21. The chaperone can accompany up to five 17-and-under guests, but must remain in the park for the duration of the visit, according to Six Flags. At Six Flags Over Georgia and Kings Dominion, chaperones are also required to stay with the group at all times, according to their Code of Conduct pages. The spokesperson indicated that the policies are "currently in place," though an Instagram post from Six Flags Over Texas indicates that the requirement will go into effect on March 22. More specific information on each park’s policy can be found at their individual websites. When asked whether any specific incident prompted the update, the Six Flags spokesperson suggested the new policies were a response to “increasing incidents of unruly and inappropriate behavior in other entertainment venues and across our industry.” “We are committed to providing a fun and safe environment for our guests and team members, and we expect guests to behave appropriately.” The spokesperson explained that each park’s policy can be updated “at any time.” (The post shared to Instagram by Six Flags Over Texas suggests that its new chaperone requirements may only be enforced "throughout spring break.") Many of Six Flags’ amusement parks, meanwhile, have already had chaperone policies in place, including the Six Flags parks mentioned above. Six Flags Over Texas and Kings Dominion, for example, had previously required a chaperone for anyone 15 or younger, and only during evening hours. Visitors to other Six Flags properties can also find stricter or more relaxed policies concerning chaperones, depending on which park they visit. Per its current Park Policies page, Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio, only “strongly suggests” that guests under 18 be chaperoned by an adult, while Six Flags New England already requires chaperones for anyone under 18 during certain hours. “While chaperone polices are not standard in all of our parks, any park that maintains a chaperone policy works closely with our corporate safety team to establish the criteria and make modifications,” the spokesperson said. “We regularly review and revise our policies and programs to provide the best possible experience for all our guests,” the rep added. Six Flags currently operates 37 amusement parks and water parks in the United States, along with two each in Mexico and Canada, and one in Saudi Arabia.
