The history of the modern Italian pizza begins in Naples in the 1700s, where street vendors sold inexpensive flatbreads adorned with various toppings, including tomatoes, cheese, oil, anchovies and garlic to the working class, according to History.com. When King Umberto I and Queen Margherita visited Naples in 1889, the queen became entranced by the version that was topped with white cheese, red tomatoes and green basil.
