(NEXSTAR) – Affected by Wednesday’s cell service outages? Krispy Kreme would like to give you a doughnut for your troubles. Krispy Kreme, which seemingly had nothing to do with disruptions to Verizon’s cell service on Wednesday, is doling out free Original Glazed doughnuts to visitors who stop by participating shops between 5–7 p.m. local time on Wednesday night. A post shared to the doughnut chain’s official Instagram account indicated the freebies were being offered as a consolation for the outages, which left many users unable to make calls or stuck in SOS mode. “SOS got you down? We can hear you now — and we’re serving up,” Krispy Kreme wrote in an Instagram post, paraphrasing a line from Verizon Wireless’ advertising campaigns. A representative for Krispy Kreme said guests will not need to provide proof that they were affected by Wednesday’s outages. No purchases are necessary to redeem the offer, the spokesperson said. "Even when cellular service is out, the Hot Light stays on!" the rep said. Verizon, the country’s largest cell phone provider, appeared to be experiencing major issues on Wednesday, with subscribers reporting their phones were suddenly unable to connect to the network and stuck in “SOS” mode. (In “SOS” mode, emergency calls to 911 should still work using other networks or a satellite connection.) The cell carrier’s support team had responded to users shortly after the issues began, saying, “We are aware of an issue impacting wireless voice and data services for some customers. Our engineers are engaged and are working to identify and solve the issue quickly. We understand how important reliable connectivity is and apologize for the inconvenience.” The company did not give an estimated time for service to be fully restored. Two hours into the outage, Verizon said engineers were still working to fix service interruptions. “Verizon engineering teams are continuing to address today's service interruptions,” read an update posted to the official X account of Verizon News shortly after 2 p.m. ET. “Our teams remain fully deployed and are focused on the issue. We understand the impact this has on your day and remain committed to resolving this as quickly as possible.”
