(SavorNation) – Whether you prefer your cookies crispy or chewy, chocolatey or fruit-studded, bakeries across the nation are hoping you’ll celebrate the sweet treat Thursday, Dec. 4. National Cookie Day was first established in 1987 by Matt Nader, the founder of Blue Chip Cookie Company. He selected the date to fall during the holiday season, when cookie-making and eating is popular. However, Nader wasn’t the first to proclaim National Cookie Day: Cookie Monster proposed a "National Cookie Day" in a 1976 episode of "Sesame Street" when running for political office. In honor of this sweet holiday, here are six ways to receive free cookies — and even a chance at free cookies for a year. Known for its giant soft-baked cookies, this New Jersey-based cookie business is offering a free cookie for the first 100 online orders with code CHOCHIP on National Cookie Day, according to a company representative. (The first 100 people at its locations in Brooklyn, New York, and Ocean Township, New Jersey, will also be treated to a free cookie.) This New York-based gourmet cookie chain is giving away free “Chewies” with any in-app purchases, a company spokesperson confirmed. Chip City’s Chewies are its thin cookie variety, which come in flavors such as chocolate chip, triple chocolate, confetti, s’mores and oatmeal. The mega viral cookie chain is the latest to hop on the 6-7 trend. On National Cookie Day, buy any in-store six-pack and receive a seventh treat for free, according to a company representative. Additionally, the first 100 customers will score a free limited-edition 6-7 sticker. Dunkin’ rewards members will earn 3x points on all espresso beverages on National Cookie Day, including the new cookie butter cloud latte, per the company. Headquartered in Georgia, this gourmet cookie franchise chain is giving rewards members a free regular original chocolate chip or sugar cookie on National Cookie Day. This deal is available in-store only through the Great American Cookies app. This late-night cookie company is giving a free snowball classic cookie (sugar cookie stuffed with buttercream and topped with powdered sugar and edible glitter) to the first 100 Insomnia Rewards members who visit any participating U.S. bakery on National Cookie Day. Hidden inside one snowball classic cookie at every bakery is a surprise burst of purple buttercream. Those lucky enough to receive the purple buttercream receive free Insomnia cookies for a year. JJ rewards members can receive a free holiday magic cookie (a sugar cookie with red and green milk chocolate M&M’s and sprinkles) on National Cookie Day by making any mobile or app purchase of $5 or more, according to a company spokesperson. In honor of National Cookie Day, Panera is offering a buy one, get one deal on four of its cookie varieties: Chocolate Chippers, Candy Cookies, Oatmeal with Berries, or Mitten Cookies. Pepperidge Farm is encouraging its customers to spread the love on National Cookie Day. Starting at 9 a.m. ET, the first visitors to PepperidgeFarmHoliday.com can send a “cookie gram” (containing a package of Milano Mint Chocolate cookies and a package of Chessman cookies) to a lucky recipient while supplies last. Customers who order Subway via DoorDash or Uber Eats can redeem a free six-pack of cookies with purchases of over $25. The DoorDash deal is valid through Dec. 17, while the Uber Eats deal is valid through Dec. 14. Fans of Nestle Toll House Cookies can race to TollHouse.com/CookieTacos at 2 p.m. ET on Dec. 4 for a chance to win a free limited-edition Cookie Taco kit.
